Choosing a Home Based on Your Kids’ School District

There are a lot of things you have to consider when choosing to buy a home, including location, size, and price. And if you have kids, you also likely want to look up school district information, since you’ll probably want to live within the best school districts.

Before having your kids transfer schools to a new district, though, there are a few things you’ll need to take into consideration.

  1. How Old Are the Kids?

Every parent wants the best education for their children, but if you’re moving, you’ll have to consider whether it’s worth it to base your decision solely on finding the best public school districts.

If your children are young or aren’t even in school yet, then it may be a wise decision to find a home in a school district you like. But if your kids are already in high school and only have a year or two left before graduating, you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to move just for the school district.

  1. Consider How Long You’ll Be in the Home

Another consideration you’ll have to make is how long you’re planning on living in the home. If you’re planning on living in the home for many years (or even the rest of your life), it makes sense to find a home in a good school district.

However, if you think you may be moving in a year or two—whether it’s to a larger house, to a new city, or to a better neighborhood—you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to find a great district even though you’ll be leaving soon.

  1. Be Prepared to Make Compromises

Homes in the top school districts tend to be more expensive, so you’re not as likely to find your dream home (at least without paying a higher price). You’ll have to decide whether it’s more important to find a house that functions for your family or to be in the right school district.

You may also have to make compromises on education if you simply can’t afford a home in your preferred school district. Research the best public school districts, and also look into private schools, magnet schools, or even homeschooling so that your kids can still get a great education even outside your desired school district.

There are many things you’ll have to consider when buying a new home, and it can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to talk everything over with your local real estate agent, and they can help you find your perfect home.
