Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Real Estate Agent?

Types Of People That Make Great Agents

When you think of sales people, you typically think of outgoing people who are very driven and focused. These are great skills that will help any sales person succeed but in addition to these qualities you also need to have a sincere passion for helping people as well as creative problem solving skills and emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence will help you keep clients and vendors calm when stress is running high.

This unique blend of skills is not only found in outstanding sales people in all industries but we also often find these same skills in people who have previously gravitated to nursing and teaching professions. You might be surprised to know that teachers and nurses come in high on the list of people who switched professions and became highly successful real estate agents.

Are You Ready To Be Self Employed?

Working in real estate, even though you are working under a brokerage, is very much like being an entrepreneur or self-employed. You literally are an independent contractor which means you are 100% in charge of, and responsible for, your own success. This takes self-discipline, drive and great planning skills.

The best agents write detailed business plans and stick to them. They keep track of statistics that help them do more of what works and spend less time on activities that are not dollar productive.

Having a very supportive broker will help you get started on the right path.

Free Guide To Getting Started In Real Estate

Do you have what it takes to become a real estate agent? (Video Transcript)

That is a great question. When you are trying to analyze whether or not you should become an agent, the key is to understand what a real estate really does and what they do not do. First and foremost, you think real estate and you think houses; but that is not the most important component of the job. Real estate agents what they really do is that they work with people and help people buy and sell houses. The first key component is that you need to like people because you are going to be dealing with people day in and day out. Technically a real estate agent is a sales person. You have to be willing to go out and talk to people and communicate and build relationships with people. If you are typically like a real quiet person that does not want to go out and meet anyone, real estate agent is probably not necessarily a good career choice or a good fit for you. Then the final key component is, believe it or not, you need to be self-disciplined. Being a real estate agent, one of the best things about it is that you have a lot of freedom but one of the worst things about it is that you have a lot of freedom. In order to make money, you are going to be able to work hard and be self-disciplined to get up and do your job and do the things you need to do to go ahead and make money. If you are the type of person that if they do not have a boss or they do not have someone really looking over their shoulders and they will not necessarily do anything, it is probably not that great of a career for you because literally you are in complete control and it is on you at the end of the day to make things happen. -Jim Manning, Licensed Broker
